Wandering near Place de la Bourse.

We wandered beside the Garonne River in beautiful Bordeaux and stopped opposite La Bourse, the old Stock Exchange building. In the foreground was the Miroir d’eau, or “Water Mirror”, built in 2006. At first the ground before us was perfectly dry, but soon the Miroir d’eau began to weave its famous magic. As we watched, the granite basin steadily filled with water, turning into a large reflecting surface. It took mere moments, as more than a hundred hidden valves pumped water from an underground reservoir up to the surface.  Now an enormous pool, the beautiful facades of the 18th century buildings were mirrored perfectly in the still water, while cars and trams whirred along the quay oblivious to their colourful reflections flashing across the water. As quickly as it filled, the water receded underground, waiting for its next cycle to commence.  We admired the ingenuity and imagination behind the water feature, which created a perfect synthesis between the old and the new.
