Wandering through Iceland’s windswept fields.

The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse like no other. We were wandering in Iceland and winter had arrived. As the grass turned from green to brown and the fields became frozen and crunchy beneath our feet, the winter chill did not seem to bother these friendly, curious animals. With their thick winter coats, they were well equipped against the often bitterly cold winds.  Brought across by Norse settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries, Icelandic horses remain a pure breed. Iceland’s isolation and strict regulations have meant that their purity and unique characteristics have been ensured for over a thousand years. In an otherwise dramatic and surreal landscape, these handsome playful horses were vibrant indications of life and nature’s resilience.
