Wandering on Cape Vlamingh in Wadjemup/Rottnest Island.

We’d hired bicycles for this day’s adventure; to cycle “The Island Ride”, a 22km loop trail around Wadjemup/Rottnest Island. We arrived at “West End”, the western and more rugged end of the island, dismounted and began to explore Cape Vlamingh. Wandering along a boardwalk, elevated to protect the burrows of wedge-tailed shearwaters and fairy terns, we reached the cape. On one side of the path was Fish Hook Bay, a sheltered bay with the distinct shape of a fishhook. Framed by high limestone cliffs, the bay was a deep turquoise colour and stunningly clear. This remote tip of the island felt wild and untamed - a place where the rugged Western Australia coastline met the vast Indian Ocean in a stunning display of nature’s force.
